In our Advanced Management Principles class on Saturday, our class topic was globalization; what a time to be discussing such a topic during a global pandemic. Dr. Linowes’ informative lecture plus the multicultural perspectives from our diverse students gave way to some interesting discussions!
During yesterday’s session, Dr. Linowes encouraged students to bring a loved one on screen to make the class more lively. The question of the day: what is your favorite food? We are lucky at Clarewood to have such a diverse student body, so we got many interesting responses.
Meeting virtually can make feeling like you are really connecting with others somewhat of a challenge, but meeting new faces and being able to share your loved ones with others makes it feel more personal. That is a major goal for us here at Clarewood: maintaining genuine connections even when we are meeting through our screens.

This week’s E-Retailing topic: the legal aspects of e-retailing. Dr. Whitaker walked her students through the variety of legal issues an e-retailing business can run into.
There are many points in the beginning stages of starting a business where you can run into serious legal issues. Some of them are: deciding on a name, opening business bank accounts, incorporating/licensing the business, creating contracts, purchasing insurance, and building a team of professionals.
One specific legal issue that Dr. Whitaker noted many people run into was not knowing the differences in types of business entities, ranging from sole proprietorships to limited liability companies.
Another issue common issue: not using proper legal disclaimers when selling products. This is an important issue for those who use YouTube as a platform for promoting.
Finally, not adequately protecting your website can lead to significant problems. If you are thinking about starting your own e-retailing business, always proceed with caution and make sure all of your bases are covered. Don’t start off on the wrong foot!

What if you were a manager announcing a tough decision that your employees fiercely oppose?
What if you must announce budget cuts, or increased work hours, and your employees face you with resistance?
These are scenarios students get exposed to in their weekly leadership talks in our distinctive course Advanced Management Principles, taught by Professor Linowes, who has developed new ways to teach that mimic the reality of the business world. Professor Linowes, who has a doctorate from Harvard Business School and worked on Wall Street for many years, shares his lessons of experience with hands-on class activities. The class also examined recent troubles facing Robin Hood, “the people’s” online brokerage firm, and the legendary history of Whole Foods, when in its first few years was flooded by Austin’s overflowing river and customers bailed them out.
When things get tough, when push comes to shove, that is a leader’s moment of self-discovery, when they find their personal mission. “A true leader champions principles and is driven by a bigger vision. Don’t be shackled and intimidated by your fears; true leaders face their fears and gain horsepower from the challenge. That commitment inspires others. That is the essence of leadership.”

Bitcoin is making major waves this week due to new interest from many major investors, including Tesla, who have adopted the cryptocurrency. Our students had many interesting insights to share about the Bitcoin news, and there were thoughtful conversations about the future of cryptocurrency in both the U.S. and abroad. What a great session yesterday! Dr. Whitaker was warm and welcoming as always, and did an excellent job of engaging everyone in the class. Her bright smile and positive demeanor made everyone feel included and no one was left out of the discussion. No back row here at Clarewood University!

Dear Members and Colleagues of the Asia Politics and History Association,
We are pleased to announce that the 2018 Annual scholarly conference meeting of APHA will take place on Saturday, October 27, 2018 in Washington, DC. Our conference is being co-sponsored by the U.S.-Asia Institute (USAI) and The Mongolia Society. The venue will be at USAI, which is located at 232 East Capitol St. NE, Washington, DC 20003–easily reachable by walking 10 minutes from the metro stop at Union Station or Capitol Hill South. Street parking is also available.
The topic of this year’s conference will be “The Impact of the Indo-Pacific Strategy on Asia.”We have invited papers covering this topic from various angles. This strategy is the terminology applied by Australia, India, Indonesia, and the United States to explain their foreign policy priorities. All the different countries of the greater Eurasian region, from South Asia, ASEAN, China, Central Asia, and Northeast Asia now reflect this concept. The 20 minute presentations of the speakers will be published in an upcoming APHA Journal.
Conference registration is from 9:00-9:30am followed by opening remarks and our Keynote Speaker, His Excellency OTGONBAYAR Yondon, Mongolian Ambassador to the U.S. Lunch will be provided by USAI. There will be two afternoon panels. A Japanese tea ceremony will conclude the conference activities. The Mongolian Embassy and Clarewood University are hosting a closing evening reception from 6:30-8:30 pm. The Embassy address is 2833 M St NW, Washington, DC 20007in Georgetown, accessible by the Foggy Bottom metro stop. A modest conference donation of $25 ($15 for students) for all attendees, including speakers, is most welcome.

Bio: Robert Hahn is responsible for leading Reed Tech’s business with the U.S. federal government. With more than 35 years of experience in the defense and civilian agency market sectors, Dr. Hahn focuses on the company’s large, high volume document management and analytics programs. Prior to joining Reed Tech, Dr. Hahn held executive level P&L positions leading government services organizations at several global companies including Serco and Pitney Bowes. He served 21 years as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army including as a member of the faculty at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Dr. Hahn holds a Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University, an M.B.A in Management from Oklahoma City University and a Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Homeland Security & Defense Business Council and the 16th Infantry Regiment Association.
